Friedrichstrasse Tower, Mies van der Rohe 1921 / Berlin,Germany
On a corner in Berlin a distorted doppelgänger stands sentry. It does not reveal the truth about what has happened to the building it protects. Rumors circulate that the Friedrichstrasse Tower simply disappeared one night; others say it has been disguised and hidden in plain sight. Only the building that remains in its place knows for sure, and it’s not talking. (28th Sept. 2011, Berlin) Mies’s Friedrichstrasse tower, an expressive glass tower with a highly articulated elevation, announces the arrival of countless glimmering high-rises. The relationship between tower and site is one of transparent urban monument.
